Apple Still Leading Tablet Vendor – Despite iPad Sales Numbers Drop

Although sales of Apple’s iPad tablet continue to slow, with the company shipping 13.3 million iPads in Q3 2014, versus 14.6 million one year ago, Apple continues to be the world’s leading tablet maker with 26.9% of the market.

New numbers from research firm IDC show Samsung holding on to its number two ranking, with 8.5 million shipments, good for a 17.2% share. However, both Apple and Samsung continue to lose ground to makers of lower priced “budget” tablets.

Lenovo saw its share of the tablet market rise from 3.3% to 4.9%, a 64.7% leap. ASUS experienced 13.1% growth, and the “Others” category, made up of of vendors who don’t make the top five list, has jumped from a 37% share to a 44.4% share, an increase of 33.4%.

The worldwide tablet market has grown 11% year-over-year, with total tablet shipments of 49.3 million, up from 44.4 million in 2013.
