Rumor: 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to See Battery Capacity Boosted by 15% Over iPhone 5s

Apple fans who are anticipating a huge jump in battery life on the new iPhone 6 may be disappointed, according to a new report today, as Apple may be planning to trade some battery capacity for device slimness in their next-generation handsets. The new report claims the 4.7-inch “iPhone 6” will boast an 1,800 mAh unit, while the 5.5-inch model will bring a 2,500 mAh reserve battery to the show.

AppleInsider:

If true, the more diminutive device would receive a battery capacity bump significantly larger than the 8 percent jump between the iPhone 5 and the current-generation iPhone 5s, likely attributable to the increased power demands of the larger display. The report was first published by Chinese technology website IT168.

If the rumored 5.5-inch model of the iPhone 6 does sport a 2,500 mAh capacity battery, that would be an increase of 60% over the iPhone 5s. Even that large of a capacity battery would still put Apple’s offerings behind similar devices from its rivals. (Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S5 boasts a 2,800 mAh battery to power its 5.1-inch display.)

While Apple’s new handsets may not sport large capacity batteries when compared to rivals, it’s possible that Apple’s vertical integration of operating system software and device hardware could still allow longer usage times, despite the lower capacity power reserves.
