Apple is preparing to launch a new, thinner MacBook near the end of 2014, or in early 2015, says a report from DigiTimes. The pseudo-reliable publication, citing supply chain sources in Taiwan, says component production for the new, thinner MacBook has already begun in small volumes.
MacRumors notes that report also says Apple will cease production of the 13-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro by the end of the year.
A report in June claimed Apple would begin production of a 12-inch MacBook Air in the third quarter of 2014. A report last month claimed delays of intel’s new Broadwell processors would cause Apple to push back the release of a 12-inch MacBook Air until late this year or early 2015.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been quoted as saying a new 12-inch thinner MacBook model would feature a Retina display, and a new design, saying, it would “redefine laptop computing” just like the original MacBook Air did.
Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro base model, which Wednesday’s report claims will be retired by the end of 2014, was given a $100 price cut in July when the Retina display Macbook Pro models were last updated.
As always, reports from DigiTimes are always to be taken with at least a tiny grain of your favorite seasoning, although while their timeframe may be suspect, it is logical to believe that the 13-inch non-Retina MacBook Pro will someday join other dinosaurs on extinction lists everywhere.
