The weekend saw the release of a new ad from American Express promoting Apple Pay. The ad, entitled “Retrospective,” shows scenes from famous celebrity related AMEX ads from over the decades, culminating in a pitch for using the American Express card with Apple Pay.
The 30-second spot takes a trip down memory lane as it recounts the brand’s historic past, starring a number of famous cardholders such as Jerry Seinfeld and Tina Fey in both the past and present.
The ad first debuted on Sunday during the mid-season premier of AMC’s The Walking Dead, and it will be featured next weekend during the broadcast of the NBA All-Star Game.
American Express hasn’t shared the exact numbers for Apple Pay signups by their customers, however Ad Age reports that the company has seen “impressive feedback” from their iPhone 6 and 6 Plus-carrying customers.
Apple CEO Tim Cook noted on Apple’s quarterly investors call earlier this month that the company has signed on about 750 banks and credit unions to support the new mobile payments solution.Cook mentioned on the same call that $2 of every $3 spent via contactless payments in the United States – including via Visa, Master Card, and American Express – was made using Apple Pay.
Apple Pay has proven popular in the U.S. following its October 2014 debut, quickly grabbing 1% of all digital payment dollars in the month of November. While Apple Pay is currently only available in the United States, the company has plans to expand to other countries, reportedly readying a Canadian launch of the service for early this year.
