LG Display Grabs 90% of Smartwatch Display Market – Thanks to Apple Watch

Market research firm DisplaySearch says LG Display, who is the only company currently making OLED displays for the Apple Watch, brought in over $186 million in the first quarter of 2015. That number is good for over 90% of the $240 million dollar smartwatch display market.

9to5Mac:

Other players in the market have tiny shares in comparison, with Samsung Display in second place with a 3.1% share, followed by Japan Display at 2.1%.

LG grabbed 66.8% of total display shipments in the quarter, with 8 million shipments. That number is almost 8 times the 1.1 million units company shipped in Q4 2014.

Other companies smartwatch display shipments paled in comparison, with Japan Display shipping 1.48 million units, Futaba pushing out 1.12 million units, and Sharp delivering 900,000 units.

LG Display’s success can be attributed to several factors, however the contract as the main provider of Apple Watch displays is likely the largest. The company has also seen some success as the provider of OLED screens for the LG G Watch R, and the LG Watch Urbane, two of the hottest-selling Android Wear wearables.

Samsung Display will reportedly begin supplying displays for the Apple Watch once the second-generation of the wearable device debuts.
