iOS 8.4 Reportedly Already on Over 40% of iOS Devices

Apple seems to have hit on an excellent way to drive early adoption of its iOS 8.4 update: Include a must have feature like Apple Music. Data from analytics firm Mixpanel indicates iOS 8.4 is on over 40% of compatible iOS devices, just one week after its release.

… This is a rather staggering rate of uptake for a point-release. Clearly, the interest and advertisement around Apple Music is having an effect on update rates. Obviously, this only tracks OS adoption and says nothing about how well Apple Music itself is being received.

While Apple Music is likely the major driver behind the quick adoption of iOS 8.4, another factor driving the impressive adoption rate could be the reduced amount of storage space iOS 8.4 requires for installation. iOS 8.4 requires only 1.8 GB to install, a major drop in size from previous versions. This allows users of devices with lesser amounts of available storage to install the update without the need for offloading apps and media to clear enough space for the update.

MacTrast’s web traffic logs indicate an even larger adoption rate of 50%. In the last week, just over half of all mobile visitors to our site that are running iOS have iOS 8.4 installed. An impressive adoption rate indeed.
