El Capitan File Indicates Split Screen Apps Support for iPad mini 4

The iPad mini 4 may support split-screen applications in iOS 9. A resource file found in OS X El Capitan indicates support for a split-screen view in Safari on the iPad mini.

9to5Mac:

The resource file shown above from the upcoming OS X El Capitan’s Safari 9 browser shows support for a split-screen view of Safari on the iPad mini. Additionally, a developer tool in El Capitan for testing the responsiveness of website designs allows developers to simulate an iPad mini 3 (which does not support split-view) running Safari in a split-view mode. With both the testing capabilities and settings image present in the upcoming version of Safari, we believe that the functionality is coming in a future iPad mini update.

Developer Hamza Sood first discovered the resource file which indicates the feature for the iPad mini. The feature is currently restricted to the iPad Air 2, which sports an A8X processor. Other iPad model’s processors cannot support the view.

The iPad mini 4 is expected to be a much larger update than last year’s iPad mini 3, which consisted of a new gold color and the addition of Touch ID. The latest rumors indicate the iPad mini 4 will basically be a smaller iPad Air 2, with improved processor, and cameras. If the new smaller tablet does boast at least an A8X processor, it would be able to handle a split-screen view.

Apple is widely expected to hold a media event on Wednesday, September 9th, where it may unveil a new iPad mini, as well as new iPhones, and possibly an improved Apple TV set-top box.
