Review: Bungee Mummy: Challenges – Not Just Another Angry Birds Clone

Bungee Mummy: Challenges by independent developer, Steampunk Wizards, is a lesson in not immediately judging a game before you delve farther into it. When I was asked to review this game, at first blush I dismissed it as just another quirky Angry Birds rip-off. However, this entertaining, and free, game soon showed me it had more to offer than just stretch and shoot action.

Overview

In Bungee Mummy: Challenges, players take on the role of a “Mummy Ball,” (just go with it), who has been asked to help King Phero save the hapless Geemies. The physics-based game has players jumping, sling-shooting, hanging from webs, and diving back and forth from crumbling pillars to work their way through the various challenges.

The plot, such as it is, has you working your way through various levels that represent Egyptian legends, packed with snakes, scorpions, cages, scarabs, and escaping carts. Although each challenge offers a quick drawing showing you what to do, it’s up to you to figure out how best to make use of your Bungee Mummy skills to face the challenges.

The game offers the following four challenges:

  • BUNGEE BLAST – Bungee launch through the cages and boom them to help the Geemies run and escape to survival. How many can you save? Expect heavy surprises as the challenge gets harder! (This level is why I got the “Angry Birds” first impression when I began playing.)
  • SNAKE SMASH – Prepare for mortal kombat with fishy snakes and scorpions but avoid the inquisitive, lovable Geemies! Speedy and sharp reflexes are needed to win fanduel – it’s between your smashy hopper and the clock.
  • CRATE ESCAPE – Drop valuable supplies into the escaping carts for the Geemies. There is a limited amount of crates to drop and time is tight so make sure you don’t miss the carts. Think ahead, survival depends on your sharp mind!
  • WHEEL OF MISFORTUNE – Collect as many arcane scarabs as possible while surviving the booby trapped and riddled Wheel of Misfortune! Prepare for unstable structures and mortal fire ahead.

Each level requires making use of a different skill to conquer the challenge. I had to tap, pull, flick, swipe, and more to meet the challenge. I found the game to be a great time passer, whether I was trying to kill 15 minutes while waiting for an oil change, or just spending an hour relaxing when there was nothing good on television.

Verdict

I found Bungee Mummy: Challenges to be a terrific little time waster. The varying challenges offered in the different levels kept my attention, and I found myself going back and trying a challenge, “just once more!”

I highly recommend the game to anyone who enjoys arcade/puzzle games that will challenge your reflexes as well as your mental skills. And for the low, low price of free, you’re not going to find a better bargain today!
