Apple Honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With Full Homepage Tribute

Apple has dedicated its entire homepage today to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. An image of the fallen civil rights leader is accompanied by this quote from Dr. King: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”

Apple CEO Tim Cook has numerous times expressed his admiration for Dr. King, and his message of equality for all. Cook told Charlie Rose in an interview that he has photos of Dr. King and slain politician Robert F. Kennedy, who were both shot and killed in separate incidents in 1968, in his office at Apple.

To commemorate the holiday last year, Apple encouraged its employees to volunteer, and offered to donate $50 to charity for each hour of employee volunteer work completed.

The third Monday in January was designated as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983 to honor Dr. King’s birthday, which is January 15th. Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, the victim of an assassin’s bullet.

“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live – a long life; longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. So I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.” – Excerpt from Dr. King’s “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” Speech, April 3, 1968.
