How To: Use 3D Touch to Read a Message Without Sending a Read Receipt

Here’s a quick tip for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus owners among us. Let’s take a quick look at how to use 3D Touch to read a message in the Messages app, without sending a read receipt.

Sure, you could always turn off read receipts, but usually, you’ll want the sender to know you got the message. But how about those time you want to check if the message is something important, without possibly starting up a conversation?

Here’s how to use 3D Touch to peek at a message. While you’re in the Messages Preview Screen, (that’s where you see all your messages), simply press down on the conversation you want to peek at. The conversation will pop-up on screen, as seen above. If you want to answer the message, or just let the other party know you read it, you can press a bit harder, and you’ll “pop” right into the full conversation.

If you decide to go ahead and reply, you can also swipe up on the “peek” while you’re holding your finger down, and select any one of the canned replies available on screen, or tap “Custom…” and you’ll go right into the conversation, where you can type a reply.
