Apple Releases iOS 9.3.1 to Fix Web Link Crashing Issue

Apple has released iOS 9.3.1 to the public. The new version comes just a little over a week after the iOS 9.3’s release. The update brings a fix for the web link issue that has been crashing a number of iOS users’ devices.

The new release is available as an over-the-air update for devices running iOS 9 and higher, and is also available via download through iTunes. The update screen, seen above, indicates the update: “Fixes an issue that caused apps to be unresponsive after tapping on links in Safari and other apps.”

Shortly following last week’s iOS 9.3 release, users began experiencing apps freezing or crashing when they attempted to open a web link in Safari, Mail, and Messages, as well as third-party web browsers such as Chrome. While most of the users who reported the issue were running iOS 9.3, there were scattered reports of users running earlier versions of iOS that were also experiencing similar crashes.

While the exact reason for the issue hasn’t been officially announced, some believe that it is related to Universal Links and the Shared Web Credentials daemon, which allows apps and websites to share login credentials.

If we find any other fixes or improvements in iOS 9.3.1, we will list them in the space below this line.
