Apple Releases Updated iOS 9.3 to Fix Activation Bug on Older Devices

When Apple released their iOS 9.3 update last week, it was quickly discovered that some older devices, such as the iPad Air and iPhone 5S,  had an activation issue after updating. Apple quickly pulled the update, and promised to issue a fixed version. Apple came through today.

The iPad Air – One of the devices affected by the iOS 9.3 bug fixed today.

Apple has released a new version of iOS 9.3 – build 13E237 – which is now available to users of older devices, either over the air, or via iTunes. Apple had stopped signing the previous update for older devices, due to the issue.

The first version of iOS 9.3 required users with older devices to input the Apple ID and password used when the device was originally setup. If that information could not be recalled and entered, the activation process would stall, leaving the device unusable.

The update now asks for the current Apple ID and password linked to the device, and not the original login password combination used to originally setup the device.

The update comes on the heels of an update version of iOS 9.3 released on Thursday, specifically for the GSM iPad 2. That device was affected by a different activation bug that prevented the device from communicating with Apple’s activation servers.
