ExxonMobil Offers Apple Pay at the Pump via Speedpass+ App

Apple Pay users can now pay at the pump at 6,000 Exxon and Mobil gas stations, but it won’t be the usual tap-to-pay experience they’ve come to know and love. Customers will need to use the oil company’s official Speedpass+ app to complete their transactions.

AppleInsider:

The Speedpass+ app was updated on Tuesday with support for Apple Pay on compatible devices. Previously, users had to manually enter and save their credit card info to use the app, but now they can authorize purchases with just the scan of a fingerprint.

App users will allow the app to identify the gas station they are currently visiting via GPS, and they’ll then enter their pump number or scan a QR code to pay for their purchase. Users can also pay for a car wash with Apple Pay, where available.

Cnet notes the app will soon offer the ability to purchase items in the store and to link its Plenti loyalty program with the app. Sorry, Apple Watch users, you also won’t be to use your Watch, since it requires NFC to operate.

While the Apple Pay support offered by ExxonMobile’s app isn’t the usual tap to pay experience users of the contactless payments system have become accustomed to, it does allow the oil company to offer Apple Pay to their customers without the need to install NFC readers at the pump.

Apple Pay will launch at 6,000 Exxon and Mobil gas stations in 46 states, beginning today. Support will spread to 2,000 more stations by mid-year, and support is planned for all 10,000 of its stores by year’s end.

The ExxonMobil Speedpass+ app for the iPhone is free, and is available through the App Store. [GET IT HERE]
