The Model Railroad Set Pulls Into the Station on the Apple TV

If you miss the model railroading sets you had during your childhood, but you just don’t have the room to setup a huge train layout, Model Railroad Set for Apple TV might be just what you’re looking for!

Create your own model railroad from an extensive menu of train cars, track pieces, roadways, automobiles, rivers, buildings, trees and other items. The free version allows driving the train on several built-in layouts or any that you receive via email (using iOS v1.2 ) from friends.

The app is available for free in the tvOS App Store, but there is an optional in-app purchase, the Train Builder Kit, with which you can create your own train layouts and share them with friends. The app was developed by Magnin & Associates, the same folks that developed the Space Station Challenge game for the Apple TV we told you about awhile back.

Users have full control of the train, moving it forward and backward, faster or slower. You can even honk the horn. All track switches can be controlled, so I suppose users could pull a Gomez Addams and wreck the train, if that’s how they roll. Multiple camera angles allow users to view and follow the train.

The optional Train Builder Kit not only lets you build and share train set layouts, it also includes everything you need to build the perfect layout, including: train cars, track pieces, roadways, automobiles, rivers, buildings, trees, even animated windmills and merry-go-rounds. Automobiles automatically follow the roadways, and stop at the train crossings.

If you purchase the Train Builder Kit on either iOS or Apple TV, you’ll be able to use it on both platforms. All of your layouts are stored in the cloud, and can be accessed by iOS and Apple TV version of the app, so there’s railroading fun always available, no matter where you are. (Even if you’re currently riding on a real train!)

Sadly, we can’t supply you with a direct link to the app in the tvOS App Store, (because that’s how Apple rolls), so you’ll have to search for either “Magnin” or “Model Railroad Set” in the tvOS App Store on your fourth-generation Apple TV. The app is a free download, and there is a $3.99 (USD) in-app purchase available for the Train Builder Kit.
