Demand for Apple’s New iPhone SE Strong – ‘Even Much Beyond What we Thought’

While Apple didn’t give any exact sales numbers for the new 4-inch iPhone SE on Tuesdays Q2 2016 earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that demand for the 4-inch device was “very strong,” and higher than even Apple expected.

During the call, Cook told call participants that the iPhone SE puts Apple in a good place to attract new customers, due ot its smaller size, affordable price, and powerful specs. Cook said the company is working to meet demand, and improve shipping times for the handset.

“We’re thrilled with the response that we’ve seen on it. It is clear that there is a demand there even much beyond what we thought. That is really why we have the constraint that we have.”

While there have been a number of reports of less than spectacular sales numbers for the new device, it has been in short supply since its release. Delivery times for the SE are showing as two to three weeks, indicating Apple is having a bit of a time keeping up with demand.

While the iPhone SE looks similar to an iPhone 5s handset, its internals are closer to that of the iPhone 6s lineup. At $399 for an entry-level 16GB phone, that is apparently proving attractive to buyers looking for a smaller, yet more powerful, handset.

The iPhone SE comments were a tiny ray of sunshine for Apple on Tuesday, as the company reported the first ever decline for iPhone sales, and the first year-over-year decline in revenue in 13 years. Apple sold 51 million iPhones in fiscal Q2 2016, down from 61 million in Q2 2015. Revenue sat at $50.6 billion, down from $58 billion a year ago.
