CBS tvOS App Joins List of Apps Integrated With Apple TV Universal Search Feature

CBS has become the latest video provider to make use of the Apple TV Universal Search API, allowing its popular lineup of shows to be included when a user performs a text or dictation search for content via their Siri Remote.

With its content indexed on Apple’s platform, CBS’ official tvOS title will be presented as a viewing option when fourth-generation Apple TV owners search for popular shows like “NCIS” and “The Big Bang Theory,” even if the app is not currently installed on a user’s device. Previously, searches for the network’s content would display results from iTunes, Netflix and Hulu.

Apple’s Universal Search is one of the flagship features of Apple’s set top box, and allows users to find movies, television shows, and other media content from anywhere in the tvOS user interface. Users can enter a search term via text or voice, and the function will display a page listing viewing options from any apps that make use of the Universal Search API.

Initially, Universal Search was limited to iTunes, Netflix, HBO, Hulu and Showtime. Apple had promised to open the search API up to all third-party developers shortly before the device’s November retail debut. Sadly, third-party developers have been slow to add the feature to their apps.

Currently, third-party tvOS apps supporting Universal Search also include those from PBS, ABC, Disney Channel, Disney Jr., Disney XD, Fox Now, FX Now, and Nat Geo TV.

Apple TV, iOS, and Mac users can get a free one week trial of CBS All Access streaming service, visit the CBS All Access website for more information.
