HTC Debuts HTC 10 – First Android Device With Built-In AirPlay Support

HTC on Tuesday unveiled its latest flagship handset, the HTC 10. The new phone features a 5.2-inch quad-HD display, an all-metal shell, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and 4 gigabytes of RAM. That’s all very well and good you might say, but MacTrast covers Apple products. That is correct, true believer! However, the HTC 10 offers something quite unusual for an Android device — built-in AirPlay wireless streaming support.

Engadget reports HTC 10 owners will be able to stream audio to the Apple TV, and AirPlay-enabled speakers. The report says at this point, the HTC 10 is an audio-only streamer when it comes to AirPlay, but the company says it will keep up with the AirPlay specification as Apple updates it, so there may be hope for video streaming at a later date.

There have long been a number of Android apps that support AirPlay streaming, such as DoubleTwist and Allcast, but including the option as a default feature in an Android device, especially one like the HTC 10, could possibly appeal to iPhone users who were considering a move to the Android world, but had an investment in AirPlay-compatible equipment to consider.

The HTC 10 has some pretty nice specs, even without AirPlay:

  • A 5.2-inch quad-HD display
  • An all-metal shell
  • A Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4 gigabytes of RAM
  • A 12-megapixel rear camera with laser autofocus and a dual-LED flash
  • 32GB of  storage
  • A MicroSD slot
  • A USB-C port
  • A 3,000 milliamp-hour battery

The phone is set to ship next month for $699, preorders are available starting today.
