Sugar Rush Shows Added Sugar in Food Products With Just a Scan of a Barcode

Let’s face it, America is addicted to sugar. According to which study you believe, there is upwards of 100 pounds of sugar consumed by every man, woman, and child each year. The largest amount of that comes from added sugars in processed foods we buy at the grocery.

Fooducate has decided to try and educate consumers by providing an easy way to discover the added sugars in the foods you buy and consume. Introducing Sugar Rush for the iPhone, which Fooducate says is the only app that can tell between added and natural sugars in a food.

See how much sugar has been added to your food! Just scan the barcode of any product and instantly see a breakdown of naturally occurring and added sugars.

Many foods have a combination of naturally occurring as well as added sugars, and there hasn’t been an easy way to tell which was which. Using Sugar Rush, iPhone users can quickly scan the item’s barcode, and in most cases, the app instantly lists the natural and added sugar amounts in the food product.

We tried it out with some items we had in out pantry, and the results quite frankly scared the crap out of us! With just a few scans of the food in our pantry, we have come to the conclusion that we need to watch what we buy and eat much closer. Goodbye, Kroger Hazelnut Spread with Cocoa! (4.5 tsp. added sugar.) Never again will you touch our lips, Cherry Coca Cola! (17.5 tsp. added sugar.)

The app is free, and we highly recommend you install it on your iPhone and start scanning. Sugar Rush is free, and is available in the App Store. [GET IT HERE]
