Unicode Consortium Approves 72 New Emoji – Yes, There is Bacon

If the current range of available emoji just aren’t sufficient to handle your range of emotional expressions, take heart. The Unicode Consortium recently approved 72 new emoji to be included in Unicode 9. And yes, there is bacon, and clowns.

Unicode Consortium Approves 72 New Emoji - Yes, There is Bacon

MacRumors:

Notable smileys include rolling on the floor laughing, drooling face, and nauseated face, while the people/body category gains shrug, selfie, and face palm. New animal emoji include gorilla, fox face, deer, shark, and owl, and some of the new foods include avocado, potato, croissant, pancakes, salad, and bacon.

I can’t believe they waited until the very last to mention “bacon.”

Emojipedia has been kind enough to share mockups of the new emoji, along with a video, and a complete list. My particular favorites, besides the bacon, are the face palm, the Batman symbol, (yes, I know, it’s just a bat, but I don’t care, it’s the Batman symbol to me), and the tumbler glass of whiskey. (Again, my name, not theirs.)

The emoji pictured above are just mockups, and likely aren’t what the final emoji will look like. Apple and Google designers will actually custom design the emoji based on the Unicode Consortium’s guidelines for each character, and they’ll be designed to match the style of current emoji.

Unicode 9 will be official come June 21, however it will take awhile for the new emoji to show up on your devices. Apple and Google will have to implement support for the new pics, and that can sometimes take awhile. (Apple currently supports Unicode 8.)
