Katy Perry Debuts New Apple Music & iTunes-Only Single, ‘Rise’

Pop singer Katy Perry has debuted a new single, “Rise,” which is available exclusively through Apple Music and iTunes.

KP unleashes a triumphant new single—only on Apple Music. It’s not about surviving—it’s about thriving. “Rise” finds the pop superstar slicing through Max Martin’s atmospheric production with an inspiring message.

Perry Says the Song has Been “Brewing” Inside Her for Years

Perry’s new tune is being used as the anthem for NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, which begin Friday, August 5. The singer told Entertainment Weekly that the song had been “brewing” inside her for years. She discussed why she finished it now, instead of waiting for a new album:

“This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite,” the Grammy nominee said in a statement. “I know that together we can rise above the fear – in our country, and around the world. I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together. I am honored that NBC Olympics has chosen to use it as an anthem before and during the Rio Games.”

No word on how long the song will remain as an Apple Music/iTunes exclusive track, but recent exclusives have lasted around a week before spreading to other music services. “Rise” is Perry’s first single in almost two years.
