Apple Developers Can Now Offer Promo Codes for In-App Purchases

Apple on Friday announced that it will now allow developers to create promo codes for in-app purchases. This offers developers a way to allow testers, reviewers, and members of the press to access content that would normally only be available via an in-app purchase.

Apple:

Give press and influencers early access to your app’s in-app purchases with promo codes from iTunes Connect. You can give away up to 100 promo codes for each in-app purchase item, up to a maximum of 1,000 codes per app.

Developers have been able to offer promo codes to download a paid app for free, but up until now, they have not had the ability to offer a code to make the their app’s in-app purchases free.

Developers can give away up to 100 promo codes for each in-app purchase item, up to a maximum giveaway of 1,000 codes per app per every six month period.

Promo Codes can be requested in the Features section of My Apps. Request up to 100 total promo codes for each platform version or 100 promo codes for each in-app purchase item, with a limit of 1,000 total in-app purchase codes per app every six months (Resetting on January 1 and July 1).

Users must have the Admin, App Manager, or Marketer role to request promo codes.

Customers can redeem promo codes for auto-renewable in-app subscriptions, if they are not a current subscriber. Subscriptions downloaded via a promo code will not automatically renew, and won’t apply to the one-year of paid service for developer subscription proceeds to increase to 85% of the subscription price.
