Walmart to Offer QR Code-Based ‘Chase Pay’ Payments at Checkout Starting in 2017

Longtime Apple Pay holdout Walmart will begin accepting the Chase Pay payments service at its U.S. stores sometime in 2017. Chase’s digital wallet will be integrated into the store’s app for in-store purchases, allowing Chase VISA credit and debit card holders to pay for their purchases by showing a QR code to the cashier.

MacRumors:

Chase Pay will also be added to Walmart’s website next year, allowing customers to make online purchases while earning rewards and receiving offers. The service secures transactions with token technology, which utilizes one-time complex codes to process transactions and keep card information secure.

Walmart has been a longtime holdout of Apple’s Apple Pay contactless payments system, which unlike the Chase Pay payments method, uses secure contactless NFC technology, which is secured via Touch ID. The merchant instead opted to take part in the indefinitely postponed CurrentC mobile payment partnership with the MCX consortium. Chase Pay was created by Chase in a partnership with MCX, which explains its reliance on QR Codes.

The Walmart app is free, and is available for the iPhone in the App Store. [GET IT HERE]
