App Store App Trends Indicate Drones, Virtual Reality Devices, Cameras, and Amazon Echo Were Popular Gifts This Xmas

If you’re curious what iPhone-related accessories and toys were popular gifts this Christmas, look no farther than the App Store.

AppleInsider looked at the top trending apps in the App Store following Christmas Day, and found drones, sports camera like GoPro, Virtual reality headsets, and Amazon’s Alexa-powered devices were among the most popular gifts given this season. (Or perhaps people bought them for themselves, who knows?)

Apps for low cost drones SkyThunder RC and CX-10 Wi-Fi were among the top trending searches in the App Store in the U.S. The $50 and under drones offer wireless connectivity and built-in cameras.

The Quik GoPro video editing app, showed some strength in App Store search results, showing at least some life is left in the fading HD sports camera maker.

Virtual reality was a big winner this year, as Monday morning saw 12 of the top 30 free apps in the App Store were virtual reality apps that were compatible with Google’s Cardboard platform. Google Cardboard headsets can be purchased for $20 or less, making it a popular budget gift-giving option this holiday season.

Pet lovers appeared to have been attracted to the Furbo Dog Camera, which offers a Wi-Fi connected camera that also tosses treats to your favorite pet. The Furbo app was in the top trending searches in the App Store this morning.

Amazon’s Alexa-powered Echo, Dot, and Tap devices were hot items this Christmas, and the official Amazon Alexa app used to control the personal assistant devices was ranked #5 on the free charts Monday morning.
