Samsung Said to Have Signed Deal with Apple to Make 160 Million OLED Panels for iPhone 8

Samsung has reportedly signed a deal with Apple to supply 160 million OLED panels for the Cupertino firm’s upcoming “iPhone 8” handset. The new device, debuting in the fall, is widely expected to boast an OLED screen.

Deal Adds Additional Screens to Previous Agreement

It was reported in 2016 that the two companies had already agreed to a 100 million unit deal, and now it appears the electronics giants have amended the deal to include 160 million OLED panels.

Apple’s new flagship 10th anniversary iPhone 8 is expected to feature an OLED screen, a Touch ID-based Home button integrated into the screen, no bezels on the front of the device, and wireless charging. A faster processor and perhaps larger storage options are also expected.

Apple is also said to be working with Lumentum on 3D-sensing technology for the new high-end phone. It isn’t clear how exactly Apple would make use of the technology for the new iPhone, although it could be used for facial recognition, or possibly be used to enhance image resolution.

As expected, the new device is expected to offer a larger battery than the current iPhone lineup. However, the exact capacity of the power cell isn’t known at this point in time.

In addition to the flagship 5.5-inch iPhone 8, Apple is also expected to offer two other handsets, which will be closer to the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models in appearance, but with improved internal specs, and possibly wireless charging.

Apple is expected to break the $1,000 price barrier with the flagship iPhone 8 while maintaining the usual pricing range with the two lower-priced models.
