Original Apple Watch Models Needing Repairs Can Now be Replaced With Series 1 Models

If you’re the owner of an original Apple Watch that needs repair, things may be looking up for you. Apple on Thursday told retail store employees and Apple Authorized Service Providers that some OG Apple Watches that require service can now be replace with Series 1 Apple Watch Models.

MacRumors notes the substitutions are allowed for only aluminum OG Watch models in Silver, Space Gray, Gold, and Rose Gold. The replacements are also limited to only “some countries.” Apple did not specify in its directive as to exactly which countries were eligible.

In some countries, Apple Watch Aluminum (1st generation) parts (in all colors) may be substituted with Apple Watch Aluminum (Series 1) parts. The parts substitution should now be working properly in MobileGenius and Repair Central.

Series 1 models are identical to the original model with the exception of an upgraded S2 chip. The dual-core chip is identical to the chip powering the top of the line Series 2 Watch, sans built-in GPS capabilities.

Original Apple Watch models are no longer covered by their standard one-year warranty, but those who are covered by AppleCare extended warranties are are still eligible for no-cost repairs from two years after the date of purchase.
