macOS to Begin Alerting Users Apple Will Soon End Support for 32-Bit Apps

Starting today, macOS users will begin to see alerts when opening 32-bit apps warning them that the Apple operating system will soon end support for the older apps.

AppleInsider:

According to Apple, warning messages like the one above will appear in macOS 10.13.4, the latest Mac operating system version that saw release last month. The alert pops up once per app and serves as notification of Apple’s pending transition to 64-bit technology.

Users who click on the “Learn More” button will see a support document about the process of shifting to the more efficient 64-bit apps. Apple notes in the document that 64-bit apps can access more memory and harness the latest technologies, such as Metal graphic acceleration.

Apple’s plan to end support for 32-bit apps was announced during 2017’s Worldwide Developers Conference. At the time, the Cupertino firm noted macOS High Sierra would be the last version of macOS to run the 32-bit programs “without compromise.”
