Apple to Shut Down Recently Acquired Texture’s Windows App

Texture, Apple’s recently acquired magazine subscription service, will shut down its Windows app after June 30.

The Verge:

Texture, the magazine subscription service that Apple purchased back in March, plans to shut down its Windows app at the end of June. Users were informed of the discontinuation this week through emails and a note inside the app, which said that after June 30th, “this app will stop working and will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store.” Texture’s Android, Amazon Fire, and iOS apps will still be supported.

While Apple does have a track record of shutting down support for competing platforms when it buys a company and its apps, the Windows app termination is said to “keep things working smoothly.” The Windows app hasn’t been updated since before Texture changed its name from Next Issue.

Texture is an all-access pass to the world’s best magazines. To keep things working smoothly, older versions of the app sometimes need to be retired.  After June 30th, 2018, the Texture Windows app will no longer be available.  Your Texture subscription will continue to be available on compatible phones or tablets running iOS or Android and on Fire HD tablets along with ongoing access to all the magazines you have selected as your favorites.

Windows users will need to transition to an iOS or Android device. Texture doesn’t offer a web client.

Apple announced the Texture acquisition alongside an appearance by Eddy Cue at SXSW back in March. The company is rumored to have purchased the service in preparation to start a paid news and magazine subscription service of its own.
