Apple to End Payment Source Changes for Older Versions of of iOS, Mac OS X & Apple TV

June 30 marks the day Apple will stop allowing user who run older versions of iOS, Mac OS X, and pre-tvOS Apple TV devices to changes their payment sources for iTunes and App Store purchases without first updating their device to a newer version of the device’s operating system.

AppleInsider:

In an email going out to customers, Apple is alerting people that the cutoff prevents payment switches in iOS 4.3.5, OS X 10.8.5, and Apple TV Software 4.4.4 or earlier. Customers will still be able to access iTunes and the App Store, including making new purchases and downloading previous ones, but will have to use whatever payment method they selected before the end of June assuming that they have no other devices to change the information.

The change is related to unspecified backend security improvements.

Few users are expected to be affected, as iOS 4.3.5 was released back in 2011, and the last device to ship without iOS 5 was the iPad 2. OS X 10.8.5 had a September 2013 release date. The operating system’s replacement, OS X Mavericks, was released less than a month later.

Apple TV Software version 4.4.4 ran on second- and third-generation Apple TVs. Version 5 debuted in March 2012, and both devices had version updates up to 7.2.2. The Cupertino firm still supports third-generation set top boxes, if only minimally. December saw the Amazon Prime Video app being pushed to the third-generation ATV.
