T-Mobile Says Hackers Stole Personal Information of 2 Million Customers

T-Mobile has announced that hackers have stolen the personal data of around 2 million T-Mobile customers.

The carrier says the stolen info includes names, zip codes, phone numbers, email addresses, account numbers and account types. However, no financial data was stolen.

The company posted a message on its website, and is also in the process of texting all affected customers.

Our cyber-security team discovered and shut down an unauthorized access to certain information, including yours, and we promptly reported it to authorities. None of your financial data (including credit card information) or social security numbers were involved, and no passwords were compromised. However, you should know that some of your personal information may have been exposed, which may have included one or more of the following: name, billing zip code, phone number, email address, account number and account type (prepaid or postpaid).

The carrier says the data theft occurred on August 20. If a customer doesn’t receive a text message in the near future, that means they were not affected. However, the carrier says concerned customers can call 611 for additional information.

T-Mobile told Motherboard that the data breach affected around 3% of its 77 million customers. That means the number of affected users would amount to approximately 2.3 million. It also disclosed that the attack took place from outside the United States.
