Apple Music’s Carpool Karaoke Takes Home the ‘Outstanding Short Form Variety Series’ Emmy

Apple Music’s Carpool Karaoke on Sunday took home the Emmy for “Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.” This is the first Primetime Emmy win for Apple.

Deadline:

It was Apple’s first Emmy for original content, joining several technical/engineering Emmy Awards the Silicon Valley company has won over the years, first in 2011 for developing FireWire and most recently in 2017 for Siri’s integration into Apple TV.

The show began as a segment on CBS’s The Late Late Show With James Corden. Apple acquired the rights for a spinoff in 2016, making it available in 2017 for viewing exclusively by Apple Music subscribers. Apple has since added the series to the iOS TV app as well as the Apple TV, making it free for viewing by owners of those devices.

While Corden has appeared in a few episodes of Apple’s version of the show, the spinoff usually offers celebrities sitting in the driver’s seat originally occupied by Corden, with other celebrities filling the other seats in the vehicle.

“To try and do a Carpool Karaoke series without James Corden was a tricky thing,” Carpool Karaoke executive producer Ben Winston said on the Emmy stage about the Apple version which features various celebrities in the drivers seat occupied by Cordon in the original. “I think this might be Apple’s first Emmy!”

Celebrities pairings on the show include Shaquille O’Neal and John Cena, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams, and many more. Apple renewed the series for a second season back in February.
