tvOS 12 Hits Fourth and Fifth-Generation Apple TVs – Brings Zero Sign-On, Dolby Atmos Support and More

Apple on Monday released tvOS 12, their new operating system for fourth and fifth-generation Apple TV models. The free update can be downloaded to compatible devices via the Settings app by going to “System” -> “Software Update.” If automatic updates are enabled on the device it will automatically update to the new version.

tvOS 12 brings Dolby Atmos sound to the Apple TV, and users lucky enough to have an Atmos-compatible sound system will be able to enjoy movies from the iTunes library, as Apple’s iTunes library is home to the largest collection of movies with Dolby Atmos support. Customers that have previously purchased movies that gain Dolby Atmos support will gain free upgrades to the new format where available.

A new zero sign-on feature builds on tvOS 11’s single sign-on feature, further simplifying the cable user authentication process. The Apple TV will now be able to detect a user’s broadband network and automatically sign them into supported apps they receive through an accompanying cable subscription. The feature is currently only available for Charter subscribers, although the feature will expand to other providers in the near future.

Aerial screensavers now include the location information, so there won’t more guessing as to what you’re seeing when the new screensavers kick in. New screensavers include those captured in collaboration with the International Space Station.
