UnitedHealthcare to Provide Apple Watch Series 3 to Customers Who Meet Six-Month Fitness Goals

Health insurance firm UnitedHealthcare is offering an option for its Motion program customers to earn a free Apple Watch Series 3. The Watch will be free from the U.S. insurer if the recipient meets their daily fitness goals for a six-month period.

CNBC:

UnitedHealthcare, which is part of UnitedHealth Group, covers around 50 million people. Since 2015, it has been investing in its program called “Motion,” which provides rewards to those who walk more than 10,000 steps per day. Hundreds of thousands of people are enrolled in Motion through their employer, said a UnitedHealthcare spokesperson.

Employers can opt in by turning on the Motion program.

Workers can request an Apple Watch and pay just shipping and taxes for the device. Once they receive the Watch, they can earn up to $4 per day toward paying off the watch by achieving their activity milestones. If the insured member already has an Apple Watch, they can earn cash rewards for their activity.

The maximum amount offered through the program is $540 for the six-month time period. Members who don’t complete enough goals to earn the cost of the watch within six months will be liable for the remaining percentage of the cost of the device.

The “FIT” program requirements laid out by UnitedHealth are as follows:

  • Frequency: Complete 500 steps in seven minutes an hour apart, at least six times per day;
  • Intensity: Complete 3,000 steps in 30 minutes, at least once per day; and
  • Tenacity: Complete at least 10,000 steps per day.

UnitedHealthcare is just the latest insurer to partner with Apple to offer Apple Watch discounts to their members, Aetna and John Hancock are also using them as an incentive to get their clients healthier.
