Apple to Add 1,200 New Software and Hardware Jobs in San Diego

Apple will be adding 1,200 new jobs at its upcoming San Diego engineering hub, up from the 1,000 promised when announcing the new facility back in December.

The news was officially revealed by San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer and Apple officials at a gathering at the Apple Store located in University City’s UTC mall.

The City of San Diego website:

Apple now plans to add 1,200 employees in San Diego within the next three years, with almost 200 of those employees in place by the end of the year. As part of a nationwide expansion, Apple announced in December that it would establish a new site and job opportunities in San Diego.

Apple’s SanDiego tech hub will eventually employ 1,200 employees, with 200 of those hires to be in place “by the end of 2019.” San Diego has long been known as a tech-friendly town, and is the hometown of Apple frenemy Qualcomm.

Apple has reportedly been targeting Qualcomm employees, attempting to entice them away from the modem maker, as Apple has been working on their own modem technology..

Apple CEO Tim Cook tweeted about the move:

Cook also said the company is “proud” to have a growing presence in San Diego.

Apple has been a part of San Diego for nearly 20 years through our retail presence and small, fast-growing teams – and with this new investment we are proud to play an even greater part in the city’s future. You don’t have to try too hard to convince people that San Diego is a great place to live, work and do business, and we’re confident our employees will have a great home among the community there.”

Apple has yet to announce a specific location for its San Diego mini campus, but KGTV reports the iPhone maker is looking closely at a building southwest of Qualcomm’s main campus in University City.

Multiple sources have told 10News that Apple is eyeing a move into a new building just southwest of Qualcomm’s main campus in University City, but Apple officials said a location for the new tech hub has not been decided.

City officials did say that “plans are also underway to develop a campus that will feature hundreds of thousands of square feet of office, lab and research space.”

Apple’s expansion to San Diego is a piece of a larger effort for the Cupertino firm to expand its business across the U.S. The company is making additional investments in U.S. data centers, and is also establishing a $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas and is expanding to other locations around the country.
