Apple says there is an issue with the logic board in “a very small number” of 2018 model MacBook Air devices. This, according to an internal document said to have been distributed to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers on Friday.
MacRumors, which first published the information, says the document was obtained from a source that has proven to be reliable in the past. The affected units will be repaired free of charge.
Apple didn’t provide any details as to what type of symptoms an owner of an affected MacBook Air might experience. The company will be sending an email to affected customers to let them know their device is eligible for the free main logic board replacement.
2018 MacBook Air owners can then visit Apple’s support website to schedule an appointment at their local Apple Store or authorized service provider. Apple will authorized coverage within four years of the Air’s original purchase date.
If the MacBook Air has accidental damage that the owner doesn’t want fixed, techs are instructed to go ahead with the logic board replacement at no cost, as long as the damage doesn’t prevent completion of the repair. If the damage does prevent the repair, the owner must pay for the repairs necessary to allow for logic board repairs.
While Apple hasn’t publicly announced this repair policy, the initial reporter is confident the information is correct. However, there is no guarantee that Apple employees will either know about or acknowledge the policy.
