Apple Releases iOS 9.3.6 and iOS 10.3.4 – Contains GPS Fix for Older iOS Devices

In addition to updates for all of their most recent operating systems, Apple on Monday also released iOS 9.3.6 and iOS 10.3.4 for older iPhones and iPads.

iOS 9.3.6 is available for cellular models of the iPhone 4s, the original iPad mini, the iPad 2, and the iPad 3. iOS 10.3.4 is available for the cellular version of the iPad 4 and the iPhone 5.

These updates are available on eligible devices over-the-air through the Settings app. To access the software, go to “Settings” -> “General” -> “Software Update.”

The software updates for the older versions of iOS are to address an issue that could impact GPS location and performance, and possibly cause the device’s system date and time to be incorrect.

An Apple support document states that it needs to be applied before November 2019, in order to maintain an accurate GPS location due to the GPS time rollover issue that began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019.

Apple says users that don’t update to the newest version of iOS available for their device before November 3, 2019, may see that their device might not be able to maintain an accurate GPS position. And functions that rely on the correct date and time—such as syncing with iCloud and fetching email—might not work.
