Apple Plans to User Apple Watch’s Low-Power LTPO Display Tech in Future iPhones

A report on Friday claims Apple is planning to use the same low-power backplane technology (LTPO) used in the recent Apple Watch models on future iPhone models.

Korean website The Elec says is making moves to use LTPO technology for their upcoming iPhone, just as they first used OLED technology on their Apple Watch, then adopting the tech for use on their iPhones. Apple’s current flagship iPhones, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

“Apple, meanwhile, is moving to more widely apply LTPO panels to its iPhones. This means it needs to find ways to work together with Samsung Display, which is holding its own in terms of both technological prowess and production capacity in the small and mid-sized OLED sector.”

LTPO, or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide, is a low-energy OLED display technology that Apple first used for the Apple Watch Series 4 in 2018. It has an Oxide TFT structure that uses up to 15 percent less power than LTPS, or low-temperature polysilicon, the backplane technology that Apple currently uses in the iPhones. The technology could extend the battery life on future iPhones.
