Sony Software Update Adds AirPlay 2 and HomeKit Support to Select 2018 and 2019 Smart TVs

Sony has begun rolling out new software for select 2018 and 2019 smart TV models to enable AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit support.

The update is available for the 2018 A9F and Z9F models as well as the 2019 A9G, Z9G, X950G, and X850G (55, 65, 75, 85-inch).

The Android 9 Pie update currently rolling out fulfills Sony’s promise earlier this year that it would be adding AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to some of its mid-range and high-end smart TVs. The update also brings Dolby Atmos support.

AirPlay 2 allows users to stream content from their iPhone, iPad and Mac right to their Sony TV. Users can watch movies and TV shows from iTunes and other video apps, and view photos directly on their Sony TV.

Listen to Apple Music, a iTunes music library, podcasts and other music services on a Sony television and AirPlay 2 speakers throughout the home — all in sync. HomeKit allows users to easily and securely control smart home products using the Home app or by asking Siri on their Apple devices. These TVs can be added to the Home app and included in scenes or automations with other HomeKit accessories.

The software update is available in the United States, Canada, and Latin America. Sony hasn’t announced availability of the update in Europe and elsewhere, but the company does plan to rollout the update internationally.

To update their Sony set, users will need to press the HELP button on the remote control and select System software update. If the update doesn’t show as available, enable the “Automatically check for update” option, and a notification will appear on your TV when the update is available.
