New Report Revives Rumors of 5G 2020 iPhone With Under-Display Fingerprint Scanner

A new report on Monday has revived the rumors that the 2020 iPhone will boast an under-display fingerprint scanner.

Economic Daily News claims touch panel maker GIS, OLED display maker BOE, and Qualcomm are collaborating on the ultrasonic technology that will be used. The Chinese-language site claims the new feature could appear in at least one of the high-end 5G-capable iPhones in the 2020 lineup.

The publication claimed back in 2017 that the iPhone 8 would have a fingerprint scanner embedded under its display. EDN also published a report last year the Apple’s 2020 iPhone would include an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Those reports claimed Qualcomm ultrasonic fingerprint sensor technology would make an appearance in at least one 2020 iPhone model, although the new feature could be delayed until 2021.

EDN’s report jibes with previous claims by Ming-Chi Kuo, Bloomberg, and others that said Apple could release an iPhone with both Face ID and under-display fingerprint authentication in 2020 or 2021.

However, numerous leaks and rumors have indicated the technology will be delayed by at least a year.

It is widely expected that the iPhone 12 lineup will include four new models. Ming-Chi Kuo predicts a staggered mass production schedule for the devices this fall. With the rumored 6.1-inch and 5.4-inch iPhone 12 models entering mass production in September and the 6.7-inch iPhone entering mass production in October. Kuo says the 6.7-inch model has “the most complicated” design.

All four models are expected to feature OLED displays, flatter edges like the most recent iPad Pro models, as well as a smaller front screen notch. High-end models are also expected to feature a LiDAR sensor.
