Disney+ Streaming Service Now Boasts 54.5 Million Subscribers – Passes Hulu in Subscriber Numbers

The Disney+ streaming service now has 54.5 million subscribers worldwide. The company announced its latest subscriber numbers during its quarterly earnings call.

The latest numbers show a 4.5 million gain in subscribers since April 8, when Disney announced that Disney+ had 50 million subscribers. The service has only been available since November 2019, showing impressive growth since its launch.

Disney’s impressive numbers are a result of launches earlier this year in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, France, Switzerland, and India, but has also benefited from the COVID-19 lockdown around the globe which has resulted in everyone sheltering in place and being starved for entertainment.

Disney+ now has the most subscribers of any of the company’s streaming services. Here are the breakdown of subscriber numbers for Disney-owned streaming services.

  • Disney+: 33.5 million
  • Hulu: 32.1 million
    • SVOD Only: 28.8 million
    • Live TV + SVOD: 3.3 million
  • ESPN+: 7.9 million

At the launch of Disney+, Disney estimated that it would have 60 to 90 million subscribers worldwide by the end of 2024. However, it looks as if Disney+ numbers will easily hit that range well before 2024, possibly later this year.
