Smartphone Sales Making a Comeback in China As It Continues to Recover From COVID-19 Pandemic

Smartphone shipments to resellers in China were up 17% in April 2020 compared to April 2019, as smartphone sales, as the country continues to recover from the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Reuters reports that new figures from Chinese authorities show April smartphone shipments from all manufacturers rose by 17% more than what they were the same time last year. Manufacturing is reported to be above where it was before the COVID-19 outbreak.

The 17% figure comes from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a state-owned body. Overall, the CIACT says that manufacturers shipped 40.8 million phones in April 2020, compared to 34.8 million in April 2019.

The CAICT report didn’t offer a breakdown between Android and iPhone devices. This is the first time in years that CAICT. This means there is no way to determine how well the iPhone is faring compared with previous months.

Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned during Apple’s April earnings call that Apple was seeing improvement in the China market during April.
