macOS Big Sur Safari Browser to Support 4K HDR and Dolby Vision Content From Netflix on Newer Macs

Safari 14, which will debut to the public this fall alongside macOS Big Sur will for the first time offer support for 4K HDR and Dolby Vision content from Netflix. While 4K content support has long been available to viewers on the Apple TV and other platforms, this will be the first time it will be available to Mac users.

Unfortunately, the support requires a Mac introduced in 2018 or later, so only owners of newer Macs will benefit from the update, all other Macs will be limited to 1080p resolution, just like before.

As was reported last week, tvOS 14 and iOS 14 now offer support for YouTube’s VP9 codec, allowing 4K YouTube content to be watched on those devices. Safari 14 on macOS Big Sur does not yet support that codec.
