iOS 14.2 Beta Users Being Bugged By Prompt for a Non-Existent Update – UPDATED: IT’S FIXED!!

(UPDATE) – The bug has been fixed with Friday’s iOS 14.2 “release candidate” seeded to developers and public beta testers.

Nope, it’s not just you. Numerous other iOS beta users are being constantly pestered by a pop-up message prompting them to update their device to a non-existent update. (I myself have been prompted.)

Users with iOS 14.2 or iPadOS 14.2 betas installed on their iPhone or iPad are being prompted by a message telling them to update to the latest beta release, even though when they go into settings to update there is no update available.

The pop-up tells users a new iOS 14 beta is available, but nothing is available. This isn’t the first time something like this has happened, as iOS 12 beta users received similar messages back in 2018.

A new iOS update is now available. Please update from the iOS 14 beta.

iOS beta users have been complaining about the message for the last few days on Twitter. The bug appears to be affecting an increasing number of users.

While the reasons behind the erroneous message are unknown, the 2018 messages were caused by a bug in the iOS system that calculates when an iOS build is about to expire. A similar bug is likely behind the current rash of update prompts.

Apple has yet to comment on the bug, but if we hear anything, we’ll let you know in this space.
