iPhone 12 Lineup to Offer Option to Download iOS Software Updates Over 5G

Apple’s iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max boasts the option to use 5G cellular data to download iOS updates.

An Apple support document, published this week and shared by MacRumors, says that to download iOS updates over 5G, users will have to turn on the “Allow More Data on 5G” mode in the Settings app under “Cellular” -> “Cellular Data Options” -> “Data Mode.”

In addition to enabling iOS updates over 5G, toggling the setting to on also allows higher-quality FaceTime, high-definition content on Apple TV, Apple Music songs, and videos over cellular. The setting also allows third-party apps to use more cellular data for enhanced experiences.

This is the default setting with some unlimited-data plans, depending on your carrier. Be warned, this setting uses more cellular data.

According to an internal Verizon document obtained by MacRumors, the downloading of iOS updates over cellular is limited to 5G iPhones with the “Allow More Data on 5G” mode enabled. All previous-generation iPhones and iPhone 12 models that are connected to an LTE network, will still require a Wi-Fi connection for downloading iOS updates.
