watchOS 7.2 Now Available – Offers Support for Apple Fitness+, Cardio Fitness Notifications, and More

Apple today released watchOS 7.2, the second major update to the watchOS 7 Apple Watch operating system that was released in September.

watchOS 7.2 introduces improved ECG functionality and support for Apple Fitness+, Apple’s newest streaming service. The update also adds a Cardio Fitness feature for the Apple Watch, which is a “strong indicator of overall health.”

watchOS 7.2 can be installed on an Apple Watch Series 3 via the Watch app on the device’s attached iPhone. Go to “General” -> “Software Update” to install the new software. The Watch should have at least 50% battery life, be connected to a charger, and be in the range of the iPhone.

Apple discussed in a press release today that watchOS 7.2’s new cardio fitness notifications:

With iOS 14.3 and watchOS 7.2, Apple Watch users can view their cardio fitness level in the Health app on iPhone, and receive a notification on Apple Watch if it falls within the low range. Breakthrough technology released in watchOS 7 allows Apple Watch to easily measure low cardio fitness, and today cardio fitness notifications empower users to be more active for dramatic long-term health benefits.

Cardiorespiratory fitness, as measured by VO2 max, is the maximum amount of oxygen the body can use during exercise, and it can be increased through physical activity. Apple Watch already estimates average and higher levels of VO2 max during vigorous outdoor walks, runs, or hikes, which many runners and other athletes monitor to improve performance.
