Netflix Reportedly Working on Spatial Audio Support for AirPods Pro and AirPods Max

Netflix is working on spatial audio support for Apple’s AirPods Pro and AirPods Max headphones says a new report from French site iPhoneSoft.

The site’s source is an unnamed Netflix employee in the United States who told iPhoneSoft that support for spatial audio is in the works. The publication says that the feature is set to launch in the spring with a “small catalog” of titles to begin with.

Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking offers a theater-like experience to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. By applying directional audio filters, and subtly adjusting the frequencies each ear receives, sounds can be placed virtually anywhere in a space to provide an immersive listening experience.

Such a feature would be limited to the iPhone and iPad versions of the Netflix app, as they are currently the only devices that offer spatial audio on the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

To take advantage of the feature requires at least AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, an iPhone 7 or higher, an iPad Air 3 or later, an iPad 6 or better, an iPad Mini 5, or higher, or an iPad Pro. Everything must run on iOS 14 or iPadOS 14.
