Rest in Pieces Adobe Flash – Abode Begins Officially Blocking Flash Content Starting Today

Adobe dropped support for its Flash Player browser plug-in and the company will begin blocking content from running in Flash Player as of January 12. Starting today, Adobe is now blocking Flash content completely.

If a browser user attempt to load any type of Flash content, the content now fails to load and instead displays a small banner that leads to the Flash end-of-life page on Adobe’s website. This marks the end of Flash’s 25-year-long lifespan.

“Since Adobe will no longer be supporting Flash Player after December 31, 2020, and Adobe will block Flash content from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021, Adobe strongly recommends all users immediately uninstall Flash Player to help protect their systems,” the page reads.

While this marks the “end of life” for Flash on all browser platforms, Apple completely removed Flash support from Safari 14 last year.

Adobe is now recommending users on all platforms uninstall the plugin, and it has no plans to issue Flash Player updates or security patches in the future.

If needed, here’s how to remove it from your Mac:

Deauthorizing Flash on your Mac

  • Go to “System Preferences” -> “Flash Player” (found at the bottom of the System preferences dialog).
  • In the top right, click the “Advanced” tab.
  • Choose “Deauthorize This Computer…”

Fully remove Adobe Flash

  • Open a Finder window then select “Applications,” open “Utilities” (or search for the “Adobe Flash Player Install Manager” app).
  • Open “Adobe Flash Player Install Manager” -> click “Uninstall.”
  • You’ll get a confirmation when Flash Player has been successfully removed.
