Disney+ Now Boasts Over 103 Million Paid Subscribers

Disney announced on Thursday that its Disney+ streaming service now has 103.6 million paid subscribers around the globe. The news came via the firm’s Q2 earnings report [PDF].

The streaming service has gained more than three million subscribers since March, which was the last time subscriber details were shared.

The Disney+ subscriber surge has been impressive. As of April 2020, Disney+ had just 33 million subscribers, and the subscriber rise has exceeded even Disney’s expectations. When the streaming service first debuted, Disney executives said they wanted to hit 60 to 90 million subscribers by 2024. The service reached that milestone during 2020.

The House of the Mouse now expects to have 230 to 260 million subscribers worldwide by 2024, which would put Disney+ ahead of Netflix. Netflix currently boasts 207 million subscribers.

Disney+ debuted at the same time as Apple TV+ but has experienced much more rapid subscription growth, thanks to Disney’s huge catalog of available content, including from Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars content, both old and new.

Disney expects to release more than 100 new titles per year, including content from Disney Animation, Disney Live-Action, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.
