Dark Sky iOS App, Website, and API Scheduled to Be Available Through End of 2022

Apple acquired popular weather app Dark Sky back in April 2020, and shortly after its purchase was confirmed, Apple shut down the app for Android devices. While Apple has begun including Dark Sky features in its iOS Weather app, the Dark Sky standalone iOS app, web app, and API will remain available until the end of 2022. Apple had originally planned to terminate the app and API at the end of this year.

Dark Sky announced in an update to its blog (first noticed by MacRumors) that “support for the Dark Sky API service for existing customers will continue until the end of 2022.” The iOS and web apps will also remain available until the end of 2022.

It was originally planned to shut down the Dark Sky web app alongside the Android application. However, that was delayed indefinitely. Numerous third-party iOS weather apps use the Dark Sky API, and they will be able to continue functioning through 2022 before needing to migrate to a new API.

The revamped Weather app on iOS 15 includes live weather notifications, graphical displays of weather data, full-screen maps, and more.
