Apple Continues to Dominate Tablet Market – Ships 12.9 Million iPads in June Quarter

Apple continues to dominate the tablet market, shipping more iPad models during the second quarter of 2021 than Amazon and Samsung’s tablet shipping numbers combined, according to research firm IDC.

IDC estimates that Apple shipped 12.9 million iPads in the June quarter, while Amazon and Samsung together shipped 12.3 million tablets during the same period.

IDC says the entire global tablet market grew 4.2% year-over-year in Q2 2021, hitting a total of 40.5 million units. Apple’s 12.9 million units shipped accounted for 31.9% of the total market, while Samsung shipped 8 million units for 19.6% of the market, and Amazon’s 4.3 million units shipped was good for a 10.7% share.

Apple grew 3.5% between Q2 2020 and Q2 2021. Lenovo had the highest growth with 64.5% growth year-over-year. Amazon grew 20.3% year-over-year.

IDC says that while the tablet market is still going strong, it is slowing down a bit from the surge in growth seen in preceding quarters. The research firm claims there are concerns that consumer tablet demand could slow down much faster than demand for Chromebooks or PCs.

Apple does not report individual unit sales, so IDC’s numbers are based solely on estimates. Apple’s last earnings reports showed that the iPad brought in $7.37 billion in revenue in the June quarter, an 11.9% year-over-year improvement.
