TSMC Plans to Kick Off 3nm Chip Production in Late 2022 for First M3 Macs

TSMC is planning to begin commercial production of 3nm chips in the fourth quarter of 2022, says industry sources who talked to DigiTimes.

Apple is expected to release its first products using 3nm TSMC-produced chips during 2023, including iPhone 15 models with an A17 chip, as well as Macs using M3 chips. The move to a 3nm process will result in improved performance and power efficiency on both future Macs and iPhones.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Apple chipmaking partner TSMC is testing pilot production of its 3nm chip fabricating process, known as N3. The report, which cited the ever-popular “unnamed sources,” said TSMC expects to move to volume production by the fourth quarter of 2022 and will begin shipping 3nm chips to customers like Apple and Intel in the first quarter of 2023.
